Building Stronger Futures: Youth Empowerment through a Holistic Approach

In August 2023, youth workers from all over Europe gathered in Barcelos, Portugal, to take part in the Erasmus+ training course titled “From NEET to Compete – A Holistic Approach to Youth Employability.” This international project was more than just a learning experience—it was a step towards real change. The training responded to a growing problem that affects many young people in Europe today: being Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET). The program helped youth workers understand these challenges and gave them tools to support young people more effectively in their own countries. Through discussions, workshops, and team activities, participants explored how holistic and practical methods can make a big difference in youth employability and personal development.

For the participants from Germany, especially those representing Copernicus Berlin, the topic of NEET youth was very relevant. In May 2023, Berlin was facing increasing social and economic problems among young people. Many youths were struggling with mental health issues, isolation, and a lack of motivation after the long period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although there were educational and job opportunities available, a large number of young people felt disconnected from them. Some came from migrant backgrounds and had difficulty accessing the same resources as others. Others lived in areas with fewer services and support. Many had low self-confidence and felt unsure about their future. These challenges were not always visible, but their effects were strong. Local youth workers felt frustrated because traditional methods were not enough anymore. There was a real need for new approaches and fresh inspiration.

The training in Portugal was exactly what was needed at the right moment. The program was full of eye-opening activities and experiences. First, the youth workers learned more about the NEET phenomenon in different countries, including Portugal. This helped them see the issue from an international perspective. It was clear that even though the countries were different, many problems were the same. This connection created a strong feeling of solidarity. Then, participants were introduced to holistic approaches that combined mental, physical, and social support. Instead of only focusing on jobs or education, these methods also supported emotional well-being, motivation, and teamwork. One of the most surprising and inspiring parts of the training was the use of sport and physical activities to build soft skills like communication, self-esteem, and trust. These methods were not often used in Germany in the same way. The German participants realized how powerful experiential learning can be when done in a supportive and inclusive environment.

The local actions in Barcelos were also inspiring. The group visited a youth center that used sport-based education to help young people reconnect with school and society. The success stories they heard showed that even small actions can create big change. Through workshops, peer learning sessions, and open discussions, the participants shared their own experiences and learned new tools to take back home. The focus was always on personal motivation, creative thinking, and long-term support—not quick solutions. It was not just about learning theory; it was about living the experience and feeling its effect.

After returning to Berlin, the participants from Copernicus Berlin felt motivated to act. They developed a new program idea inspired by the training in Portugal. It was a three-month youth empowerment project that combined weekly physical activities, creative workshops, and career guidance sessions. The goal was to help NEET youth in Berlin feel more confident, connected, and capable. The program focused especially on young people from migrant families or low-income areas, who often face extra barriers. The activities were designed to be fun but meaningful—team sports were used to build trust and communication, while creative sessions helped the youth express their thoughts and dreams. Career talks with local professionals helped open their minds to new paths.

The impact was stronger than expected. Many of the young participants reported feeling more motivated and less isolated. They started to believe in themselves again. Some joined further training or looked for internships. Parents also noticed changes at home—their children were more positive and active. The local community became more involved, with volunteers joining the sessions and schools becoming curious about the new method. Even some local decision-makers showed interest in supporting similar initiatives in the future. For Copernicus Berlin, this was a clear sign that the training in Portugal had a real effect beyond the learning week. It started something new in the local community.

Looking to the future, this experience reminded everyone involved how powerful young people can be when they receive the right support. Youth empowerment is not only about jobs or diplomas—it is about giving young people the tools to understand themselves, connect with others, and take action. Programs like “From NEET to Compete” show that international exchange and holistic thinking can change lives. The long-term vision is clear: stronger communities built by confident, active young people who believe in their future. And for youth workers, this project was a reminder that change always starts with listening, learning, and trying something new.
